Bridges to Nowhere PnP Kickstarter edition

Some time ago, company Doomsday Robots lunched a kickstarter for their new game Bridges to Nowhere.
I pledged for PnP files, and the time finally came when they arrived.

So far, I made only components needed for two player game, in order to play it solo. I went for the more robust build, making tiles on 2mm cardboard base instead of classic cards.
I packed the game into box from Carcassonne expansion. The current components fit nicely, and there is enough space for 3 to 4 players update should I decide to build it.

The game itself uses drafting mechanism, where you draft bridge elements and then try to build them into your bridge in order to maximize points. Points can be earned from bridge segments (Each built in segment brings specified number of victory points by itself. Matching symbols on adjacent tiles  and using specific tiles like monuments and toll stations can significantly boost your point total) or by fulfilling specific contract conditions predefined before each game.

Solo game is well designed, dummy player will always take the best cards and you have to use all your wits to outsmart it. Normal difficulty gives just the right challenge for average player.

Final opinion? Bridges to Nowhere is a nice and thematic drafting and tile laying brain burner that especially plays well with the music of Talking Heads in the background. For me, it is definitely a keeper.

News and the lack of it

The reason for the long break between the posts is the fact that I have recently put more of my gaming time into board games, and there is much less story there than with wargaming or RPG.

I had a chance to purchase Friday and Onirim on the local used games market.

I was really excited to be able to play Friday, but the game itself was a bit of a disappointment. Not that the game is bad, it just wasn't exciting enough for me, and I had no reason to play more than couple of games.

On the Other hand, from Onirim I had no expectations, especially having in mind that I acquired first edition of the game (with only 3 expansions comparing to the 7 in the second edition) and the edition in German language (lucky for me, Onirim is language independent game and the rules in English can be downloaded from internet). So, Onirim was quite a surprise for me.
I could not believe how atmospheric can a set of cards be in a solo game. I really have that feeling of wandering trough the labyrinth of nightmares.

At the moment I am playing base game with the addition of Towers expansion, and I can not get enough of it. I am still to try other expansions.

Also, June 1st will mark the start of the 2016 BGG Solitaire P'n'P Contest, so I am preparing my candidate.
So far just a quick teaser picture:
Game will be called Dungeons of Light and Darkness, and will use tile and dice placement push your luck mechanic. Elements are ready, game is playtested from my side, and now I am working on writing the best rule-book possible. But more about this game in June.

Tiny Epic Defenders

Another physical kickstarter award arrived.

This time, it is a game called Tiny Epic Defenders, by Gamelyn Games.
Tiny Epic Defenders is a 1+ filler game that can be played in 30 minutes.
While some players judge it as repetitive, after first few games I see a lots of potential here.
The basic mechanic of the game is "counting cards". There is a limited number of same cards appearing every turn. Player's goal is to remember which cards passed this turn, in order to position his hero at the best possible location when the next card is drawn.

The game starts slowly, but quickly turns into a mess with regions being destroyed, and player racing against time trying desperately to achieve victory. With that, game resembles Red November or Pandemic.
So, this is quick game, with enough repleyability to keep me occupied and with small print, it has everything we busy father type gamers need, and I am glad I put my money on it.

Pleasant dreams

Yesterday, I received a copy of the first "physical" kickstarter I ever supported.

It is a card game called Pleasant Dreams.

It is a simple push your luck card game, no better or worst than bulk of the print and play games appearing every year on BGG solo print and play competition.

Challenge and re-playability level for one player is pretty low. Game seems to fare a little better for two players.

The good thing with the game is production, which is done properly, and the art is really nice.

Highway to hell

The very first kickstarter project I put my money into was a game called Battle for souls, by Robert Burke.
Of course, I opted for print and play version, since delivery costs to my part of the world were almost equal as the price of the game itself.

And recently files have landed to my my inbox.

Battle for souls is a 1 or 2 player card game where players choose side of Heaven or Hell and try to earn victory points by convincing souls from Earth to join their side.

Since I am primary interested in solo experience, I printed just a Hell side cards so far (Heaven is for girls, right ;) ).

Here is the photo from one of my first games.

Except from souls you are fighting for, game consist of two types of cards.
First type are Temptation cards. Basically, these are 7 differently colored sets of 6 cards, that player tries to arrange into well known poker configurations (one or two pairs, 3 of a kind, full house, etc) in order to get benefits. The color matching between Temptation cards and the Souls is one of the main mechanics in this game.
Second type are special cards that help player earn victory points, and they can be Devils, Sins, or Unholy relics, each with its own specifics.

There is no enemy AI in solo game. Player competes against cards and races against time trying to score 40 victory points before Temptation deck runs out.

The game plays quickly, and I managed to play two games within 45 minutes. I lost them both, reaching 32-33 points, which seems to be average score for inexperienced player. On the other hand, I played these games rather mechanically, with no clear strategy, with the single goal to get familiar with the mechanics. Still, it seems that my decision were important, I was not left to the luck of the cards, and I hope to win some of my next games by preparing my tactics.

As a conclusion, I am happy that I backed this game on kickstarter. It is an interesting game that can be played quick, and that can be played out of a box, which is at this moment really important to me considering that my second kid will be born in less then a month and that my gaming window will probably become even smaller than it already is.

Highly recommended.

Power Surge Superhero solo card game

Most of my time in last couple of weeks was invested into design of my new game.
Finally I have finished the first version I am satisfied with.
At the moment, the game is called Power Surge and by theme it is Solo Superhero Collectable Card Game.

The current version can be considered material for closed beta testing, and, as some of you already know, I have already distributed the files to several play-testers I know that are interested in superheroes, solo games and/or  CCG.

At the moment, I would like to have 2 or 3 play-testers more, so if you are reading this and wish to try the game, contact me at sharanac (at) yahoo.com

Back from vacation / New solo CCG in design

I have just returned from nice sea vacation in Turkey Antalya region.
Here is an monument left from ancient local tribe, found at local beach site by archeological expedition led by my 2 years old son.
Arguably it represents a duck with the tall hat, most likely prehistorical representation of Scrooge McDuck :)

In other news, I started working on new solo collectable card game.
I believe that  I have found new approach to the solo CCG, since every player card will have 3 possible usages - as element attack, support attack or special characteristic card.
Combination of 2 cards will be needed to do damage to enemy, and at least one special card is expected to be played each turn, so the hand will go empty quick. Therefore, for successful play, player will have to think about dealing damage to enemy, draw as many cards from deck as possible and also return as many cards from discard pile into deck, for deck is also getting thinner with each turn, and once there is no more cards in it, it will be game over.
So far, I  made basic components and did some play test, and I am satisfied with the result. Cards are just colors and numbers at the moment.
My next goal is to decide about the theme of the game. It could be generic fantasy, but I think we are all a little bit bored of that.
So far, I think between Munchkin style humor or Superhero game, but I am not convinced what to do. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Once I finish, I hope to offer this game to some small game making company, but if no one is interested, there is always 2013 Board Game Geek solo game making contest :)
If anyone wants to play test the game (or might be interested in publish it, of course :) ) contact me by commenting here, or by mail sharanac (at) yahoo.com

11.11.11. report: Lord of the Rings Card Game

My second game on Solo Wargaming day was a hand of Lord of the Rings Card Game.

Until today I have played seven or eight rounds, sticking to first scenario Passage through Mirkwood.

As soon as I have purchased the game, I tried to beat it several times using 3 heroes located in the spheres of Lore and Spirit. I lost every single game.

Then, I switched to the heroes from spheres of Leadership and Tactics, and I was victorious in two games in a row.

But Leadership and tactics are not the spheres I want to play, therefore on 11.11.11. I decided to try again with Lore and Spirit. Of course I have lost miserably.

At this moment, game seems a little unbalanced, favoring certain spheres, but I will keep trying with Lore and Spirit until I find the tactics that can get me through first scenario every time….

LOTR Adventure Deck Game

Here is another interesting entry to the Board Game Geek solitaire P'nP competition. Game is called LOTR Adventure Deck, and can be downloaded for free here so go do it.
Basically LOTRADG is a push your luck game. You have 25 turns to go through complete deck and reach Mordor in order to destroy the ring. The faster you move, the more risk you take, but if you are too slow you may found yourself arriving to late... In your journey you will encounter friends as well as the enemies, all well known from Tolkien books.
I like to call games like this a peanuts game. For just like with peanuts, you can't have enough of it. Win or lose (and lose you will) your next thought will always be "I think I have time for another one" :)
Each game is played in 5 to 15 minutes, and it is a great pastime if you are waiting for something.
And no matter how good you are, there is no guarantee that you will win every game. All you can do is to measure your record, be it the number of straight wins, most wins in ten games or the least number of turns you used to reach Mordor. Whatever you choose, and no mater how good is the record, you will always try to beat it, so this is not the game that will quickly leave your playing desk.
As it is practice with BGB games, game comes also in printer friendly mode, but as usual, I recommend printing color version in small cards format with 2 pages on 1 sheet of card-stock, in which case you will need just 3 sheets of card-stock for 54 cards and one sheet of regular paper for playing mat to complete the game.
Game is also available as Artscow deck.

Unbound: Dungeon Crawler

Dungoen Crawler is a solo card game produced by Canadian company Gifted Vision.
It is planed to had numerous expansions, and the first published deck is called Unbound.
If you are a solo gamer and you love CCG type of games, this might be the very right thing for you.
But, if you want to play it, there are some good and some bad news.
If you live in the US or Canada, cards are reasonably priced, and easily accessible. But if you live in Europe like me, it has to be noticed that company do not have distributors out of Northern America, so the shipping costs can go over the roof, rising the price of the package to the unacceptable level. Luckily for us on this side of Atlantic Ocean, Gifted Vision offers free PnP version of their game on their web page (rules are given in pdf format, and cards are in jpg). You will need to invest some time and effort to assemble all cards, but to the real solo gamer it shouldn't prove too difficult (OK, I did cheat by not printing card backs, but I wanted my set to be playable as soon as possible, not pretty to look at :) )

The Scuttling Menace

This is second Card Quest adventure in the 3 friends campaign. Earlier adventure can be found HERE.
Word has reached Hadrad that the village of Montoress has been under siege for some time by monstrous creatures. Although the villagers have been able to hold off most of the attacks, occasionally one citizen will fall and be dragged off screaming into the surrounding forests, never to be seen or heard from again.Upon arriving at Montoress to offer their assistance, adventures were told that the marauders appear to be grotesquely enlarged insects! And during every attack, someone catches a glimpse of a humanoid creature in the background, apparently coordinating the attacks. This shadowy figure - often seen riding a giant red ant - is referred to as “The Insectomancer” for it is he who is orchestrating the chaos. Many weeks ago, the village sent its strongest warrior - Gorshyn - into the woods to put an end to the attacks. He never returned and is feared dead. He was armed with an enchanted weapon that they‘d like to recover. The townspeople don’t have much, but they offer our heroes to keep the Mace of Gorshyn if they are able to locate it and if they are able to defeat The Insectomancer and his fire art steed. They will also reward adventurers for any mutant insects they defeat and if they can locate the body of their fallen warrior. And so, elf ranger Vullesar, human illusionist Ganimed and dwarf trekker Hadrad were taken to the edge of the woods and pointed in the general direction the attackers retreat to. After several hours of walking, adventurers come across a huge pile of loose earth in the middle of an open glade. Climbing to the top for a better look, they discovered what it actually is - the largest anthill they have even seen.Entrance chamber was too small for all, so only Vullesar and Hadrad descended, while Ganimed held the rope for them.At the very entrance, elf ranger stumbled into Pit critter. He was able to see it on time, but while trying to destroy the monster, Vullesar was careless, got bitten and lost one health point.
Little bit deeper, Hadrad supprised Giant hornet. His second attack missed, and hornet stroke back, but dwarfs battle worn shield deflected this blow. The battle continued, and dwarf cut of hornets head with the precise blow of xis axe. But dying insect managed to sting our hero with the last breath. First quest point earned, but with a health point lost.Taking the wrong turn, Vullesar found himself in front of collapsed tunnel.
A ghost of fallen hero suddenly appeared in dwarf trucker's way. But Hadrad was not afraid, and just walked through it. Ghost dissolved behind him into nothingness.Retracing his steps, Vullesar took another tunnel. Unfortunately, this one was cut with the bone pile. Elf returned few meters back, started running and jumped over the obstacle, leaving it behind him.
The corridor Hadrad took ended with bottomless pit. It was not a problem for experienced trekker, who descended down the pit, leaving supports for legs and hands for everyone who might come this way after him.Moving on, elf detected wasp's nest. While removing it, Vullesar lost another health point.
At the bottom of the pit, Hadrad concentrated to decide where to go next. Therefore, he was really surprised when he was attacked by giant mantis! His battle worn shield was useful again deflecting the first blow, but the battle was fierce, and until the moment mantis died, dwarf was left with only one health point. This epic battle earned him second quest point and improved his knowledge, so he become level 3 trekker. One old wound felt better, but he was still left with only 2 health points, so Hadrad decided to leave the ant hill, and leave further explorations to Ganimed.Vullesar's way was suddenly cut with volcanic fissures. Elf was surprised to see them, but he managed to avoid being hurt by jumping from one rock to another. This experience was new to him, and made our hero a level 3 ranger. Proud of it, elf got careless, and burned himself, losing one health point he just recovered.
Wizard first encounter was frightened rat's nest. Invoking the image of a cat, Ganimed scared them even more, so they run away. In now empty nest, human found amulet of insight.
Wizard could not use it with his pipe of warmth, so he give it to his friend Hadrad.
Deep within the ant hill, ranger detected giant beetle. He eliminated it with three precise arrows, earning third quest point. On the insect body, elf found rune of stealth.
Ganimed got to the wobbly log bridge. He created illusion around it, and this way crossed securely to the other side, not having to be afraid to look down.
The next pathway the wizard took turned out to be unfinished, so he had to retrace his steps.
Vullesar surprised a green ooze, and eliminated it on the move.
Looking for the new enemy, Ganimed forgot to look down, and stepped into small ant hill. Ants crawled up his leg and bit him, so he lost one health point. Illusionist tried to escape, but his wiggling made ants only angrier, so they bit him again. Finlay, with only 4 health points left, human managed to run far enough from the pesky insects.
Entering the deepest level of the lair, Vullesar detected Insectomancer. He used rune of stealth, wishing to sneak on the monster, but it used arcane wizardry to prevent ambush, and elf lost one health point!
Battle raged for a while, and ranger managed to kill his enemy, but lost another health point in the process. He was lucky to found some healing herbs on monster's fallen body. Elf used them immediately, gaining one health point, therefore continuing this adventure with 3 left. 4 quest points were rewarded for killing insectomancer.
In the next room he entered, Ganimed found the body of a fallen hero. He picked up his mace and earned one quest point.
Behind Insectomancer's lair was a stable for giant red ant. Vullesar fired an arrow from distance, end it found it's mark. But then the red ant came charging, and ranger lost one health point. Elf fired second arrow, and then another one, trying to keep monster at the distance, but he was unable to load his bow for the forth time. Using arrow as dagger, he pierced creature's heart from point blank. But he was not fast enough, and ant acid heart him one more time, leaving him with just one health point!
With insectomancer and his steed dead, our heroes decided to bail out of ant's hill. But the road was closed for ranger, with bone pile standing in his way. Elf was too week to jump over it again, so Ganimed entered the corridor from other side, planing to remove this last obstacle.
Ganimed came ready, and started to clean the way through bones. It was the tough job, and he had to pause to take a smoke from his pipe of warmth, not knowing that it will be for a last time
(remove is success, but hero has to take defense roll. Defense is success thanks to pipe of warmth). Magic required for removing bones required drop of Ganimed's blood. So he cut himself losing one health point. He didn't even notice when his trusted pipe of warmth fell out from his pocket!
Angry because he has lost his his favored item, human got careless, and lost another health point, having only 2 left. And another drop of blood was needed for the magic, so Ganimed hurt himself again, having only one health point left. And this time, again, he lost an item, a mace of the hero, but illusionist couldn't care less. The road was finally wide enough for his elf friend to pass.
The road was finally clear, and the three friends were free to leave the ant hill. Although our heroes finished it barely alive, it was another successful mission! For their troubles, heroes were rewarded with Amulet of protection (level 14 item) that was given to Ganimed, who lost all his equipment in bone pile.

Necromanser's Mansion

Card Quest is a simple dungeon crawl card game. I decided to play campaign, and therefore I will start with 3 heroes, having in mind that this is game where characters die.
3 friends, elf ranger Vullesar, human illusionist Ganimed and dwarf trekker Hadrad entered the mansion of necromancer Mox Darkdabbler.Trying to scale the outer walls of the mansion, Hadrad the dwarf got entangled into grasping wines. He was not surprised, but he failed to remove the wines in first try, and got hindered, therefore he will have -1 to next roll. Trying again he rolled 10, and this was enough even with penalty. He moves on, but with only 5 health points.
Vullesar entered through cellar and run into cellar snake. He was swift enough to ambush the snake and eliminate it with precise arrow. Below the snake's body, rolling lucky double 6, elf found level 13 item Unicorn Horn and became level 2 ranger.
Ganimed entered through main door, guarded with chained skeletons. Illusionist detected this trap on time, and removed it without problems.Finding himself in the back yard, Hadrad's eye of a trekker detected some hazardous Loose Earth ahead (natural 12 surprise roll). This quick observation moved him up one level, which made him forget his old wound. Being level 2 trekker also made it easy for him to remove this hazard and earn 2 quest points.
Elf ranger also made good use of his eyes. He detected Hidden Passageway that took him to the private part of the house.
Ganimed encountered the toughest opposition this turn. Entering the main hall, he was surprised by Cackling Ghost. Lucky for him, human was able to use magic and make himself invisible (ambush roll failed, but landed inside re-roll zone). Illusionist's next attack hit the ghost, but the dying monster was able to strike back. Ganimed received one more lucky break: being invisible, he was not easy to hit, so the ghost's last attack went wide.Upon entering the building, dwarf stepped into Mox's Deathtrap. He was not expecting it, so he felled into the trap and lost one health point. Trekker noticed the small repair door in the side of the trap so he used it, leaving the deathtrap active, a risk for some poor soul who will pass this way in the future.
Entering deeper into mansion, Illusionist detected a field of Poisonous fumes. He was trying to remove this hazard, when the cloud reached him, and he lost one health point. Then the blow of magic wind dispersed the fumes, and Ganimed moved on.
Walking through the narrow passageway, elf came to the door guarded by a Zombie. Ranger's arrow hit first, but it was not enough for such a tough opponent. Zombie's hellebard found it's target twice, until Vullesar managed to fire enough arrows to dispose of the undead. Elf moved on, with 4 health points left.Ganimed had passed only few steps when the passageway he took ended in front of the open tomb. Illusionist earned a quest point, but he will have to retrace his steps. And just as he returned all the way to the front door, he noticed a flaming arrow piercing the sky.
Tunnel the dwarf took lead straight to cellar. Jumping out of it, trekker surprised a pack of cellar rats. Pack leader tried to attack back targeting Hadrad's leg, but his bite was not strong enough to penetrate dwarf's boot. Few precise axe blows later, rats were history. And as he was coming out of the cellar, trekker noticed a flaming arrow passing above his head.
For behind the Zombie guarded door, ranger found the necromancer himself. Mox was involved in some strange ritual and it seemed that he has not seen the elf. Vullesar decided to take no risks: first arrow stroke necromancer's back. Mox managed only to turn to face his executor, so the next two arrows hit him in the chest. He crumbled to the ground, dead. The mission was over. Elf approached the window, lit one arrow, and fired it into the sky.

Adventurers rested in the nearby village. Grateful locals awarded them with 2 level 12 items of their choice (6QP worth + 1QP wasted). Ranger already has his Unicorn Horn, so he left the choice to his friends. Therefore, illusionist selected Pipe of Warmth and trekker Battle Worn Shield, and these are the items my heroes will take into next adventure.
