I just changed the characters around. I especially remember converting a few Thomas the tank engine stories into warrior adventures (tunnels) and one into a pulp 1930 type exploring game (mistaken dinosaurs on the tracks). Nothing to do with trains, but a few years ago for my children Thomas just seemed to easily lend itself to interesting stories in other settings!
