the first score, I decided that some dock gang stole a box from one of
the nobles traveling on a ship, and that cargo contains a book that
might be worth a fortune to some of the occult bands.

Battle plan
was to direct a flock of ghosts through the warehouse where cargo was
kept. This will spook the guards and make them run away. Our boys will
then waltz in and take a book without anybody noticing.

The first
part of the plan went OK, ghost flock entered the warehouse and scared
the guards, but then ghost went rogue and decided to stay inside instead
of moving forward.

Time
for plan B. Whisper attuned to to ghost field to detect where the
ghosts are, but he also found out that some government ghost hunters and
policemen are coming, so that our heroes need to hurry and finish the
job before they arrive (6 parts clock, 2 ticks).

Lurk surveyed the situation and decided the best way they should move to attract as little of ghost attention as possible.
Team
tried to sneak past ghosts, but they failed, and ghost stampede right
through our heroes causing some serious psychological damage.
Additionally, that ticked off the 6th part of the clock, so police arrived.

Team made desperate run out, failing the mission. Additionally - the heat was super high, giving them wanted level.
Beaten and wounded, our heroes return to their empty home....
THE END

I really enjoyed this one.
But, also I finally understood why I like one shots.
To
make it interesting, I really like to keep my characters at the edge of
survival and success, on a razor edge, as that is what makes an
exciting session for me.
So, after that first session, they are
usually too beaten to continue into the next mission, or next mission
has to be light to give them chance to recover, and therefore boring. And then I lose interest to continue the campaign.

Therefore, I will be sticking to one shots.

Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-8968815860731088542023-11-20T17:42:00.001+01:002023-11-20T17:44:32.945+01:00Vaesen: Into the Mithyc North
During the Halloween season, Free League offered Vaesen PDF for free, so I had to grab an
opportunity. I purchased the official solo rules and jumped into mythic

letter informing him that somebody poisoned all drinking water in the
village Illustad.

Attached to the letter was a doll, normal looking,
like any girl would carry.

After traveling to Illustad, Hal talked to
local bard and was informed that water is like this because people
stopped respecting Vaesen. Bard knew nothing about the doll.

Then he
went to speak with farmer who discovered the issue. Farmer gave our hero
a special coin that was once forged by local blacksmith and thrown into
the spring to please the local Vaesen. But since old blacksmith died of
old age, his successors are no longer forging such a coins.

Together,
they visited the local spring that was poisoned, but Hal could find no
further clues. Instead farmer dropped sick on him. Hal tried to cure him
but failed and farmer died, while Hal got Exhausted from effort.

With
no other idea, Hal visited young blacksmith, son of the old master. He
is a talkative fellow, so it was easy for Hal to inspire him into
teaching our hero how to forge a mythical coin, even if Hal ended
Afraid, as part of his soul was forged into coin. Blacksmith even spill
out that someone in town once killed a Vaesen, and burred its body
inside now poisoned spring.

But asked about the doll, blacksmith refused to talk, even though he obviously knew its history.
Hal
tried to read his body language to learn why, but blacksmith kept calm,
until Hal got Angry (pushed roll), when blacksmith also broke and
confessed that there is another Vaesen in village - a Nisse connected
with Smithy that helps him in forging. If he says too much, Nisse may
leave, and the business would be ruined....

Hal then decided to investigate a doll, and he discovered that strange fluid is dripping from it, smelling on sea weeds....

Hal
now has a rather good idea what he might be dealing with, but he needs
to confirm it. So, he decided to go back to the stream for another
investigation round, but this time he will be looking for a small
grave....

This time, Hal had no issue to find the burial place. He decided not to
act alone, but called local priest. Together they dig the shallow grave
and found a body of a little girl. While at first remains looked human,
remains of swimming nets between her fingers revealed the truth - she
was a Sea Child, daughter of blacksmith and a Mermaid.

Priest buried
girls remains on holly ground and Hal left her a doll with her. That
should keep her spirit in peace, village has enough trouble than to deal
with the restless ghost too.
Next night, Hal broke into the smithy,
looking for clues. He found out that Blacksmith never knew that he had a
daughter form his affair with the mermaid.

But Hal also found
evidence that Nisse from the Smithy knew it. And Nisse was the
responsible one for deaths of both girl and the farmer. He acted to
protect his blacksmith and their work, but no matter his motives, his
course of action was doubtful.

Hal returned to the river, and threw a
coin he forged into the spring. As it contains part of investigators
soul, mermaid will be able to read it and learn the truth. Hal decided
to let Vaesen solve it between themselves.

Next morning, all waters in village were again clear and drinkable.

But
the river started rising, and soon it flooded the area. Blacksmith was
hit the most, his shop was completely ruined. He survived, and tried for
a year to rebuild his business, but the quality of his work was nowhere
near to the one before the flood. Only few people in the village
guessed why.

Blacksmith left after the year, and another family took
his place. Society took care that newcomers learned how to forge the
soul coins. Tradition should be kept, and when you have Vaesens near by,
one has to do the best possible to keep them satisfied and at peace.

Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-49023154687223583442023-01-10T11:23:00.003+01:002023-01-10T11:35:13.406+01:00The Zone RPG
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

hero is called Spinoza, call sign Nerd. He is PhD student at local
university for xenoarcheology, working under his mentor Dr. Aristotle.
Spinoza
selected for his thesis history of precursors vaults, expecting it to
be a safe theoretical subject since his chances of seeing one in life
were slim.
But it all changed after an accident including some kids doing illegal space ship races among planet rings.
Hidden
between space debris, strange precursor's machine was discovered. It
seems to be still operational, as its parts moved relative one to
another.

So the government decided to send someone from the
university to investigate the thing. And who would be better suited than our hero who studied precursors for so many years...

Travel to the machine passed without issues. Furthermore, vault had a
clearly marked docking area for spaceships, as it was inviting people to
visit it.
But behind the docking gate our hero was met with
impenetrable darkness. As if all power was diverted from less important
systems to maintain vaults purpose.
Spinoza fired the light on his suit, knowing that it has limited energy and that light may soon disappear.

Here, I decided to start the 6 segment clock
representing power in the battery supplying the light.

Next room
was filled with some kind of boxes, and Spinoza had a strange wish to
stay in this area longer and study them. Just as if some voices in his
head wanted to keep him there forever. As his lamp used more and more
power and the clock rushed forward, our hero had to fight urge to stay
which seemed to come from the vault itself. Finally, he snapped out of
it and managed to continue the journey.
Spinoza finally reached the
core of the vault and was able to understand its purpose - vault was
some kind of ice storage, a vehicle that carried bodies of dead
predecessors to their final resting place.
Are the bodies still in
the containers? Who knows. At the moment Spinoza had no resources to
find out. It might be a good goal of some future expedition.
At that
moment, our hero's main mission was to return to university alive and
tell the tale. On a way back, battery finally died, light went out and
our hero had to stumble through the darkness of this ancient cemetery
for a while, which seriously messed with his mind. But at the end he
managed to reach his ship and return home - stressed, but with no
permanent consequences.

Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-8680827721552323962021-12-30T13:03:00.005+01:002023-01-16T15:21:44.074+01:00The Journey
One of my recent acquisitions was a journaling game called Journey, by Luke Miller. The game can be purchased here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/350043/Journey

What can I tell you - this game is goood!

Here
is the write-up from one of my plays, where I was exploring the
city in Ironsworn setting. My Ironsworn character Otter just crossed the
mountains and is moving towards the city, and I wanted to explore the
location through the eyes of another traveler before she gets there.

Setting Name: City of Etulf - Ironsworn
Setting Details or Description
One
of the very few cities in Ironsworn world, it is what could fit inside
the fortress wall and around it. Someone important whose power stretches
over mountains lives in the city, but this person is probably not the
main official authority there - so most likely there is more secrets in
the city than what creates its visible part.

Journey Length: 4 waypoints

WAYPOINT 1
Waypoint Type: Archeological
Waypoint Name: Old Castle
Number of aspects: /

Travel
As
I walked in from the wilderness, I noticed 2 fortresses standing. One
big to the west and another, smaller and ruined one a little bit east.
The old castle intrigued me, so I started moving towards the ruins.

TRAVEL EVENT:
Travel Event Type:
You
are being blocked from proceeding to your currently intended Waypoint.
Skip to the next Waypoint in your Journey (or draw another), doubling
back to your current destination afterward if you wish.

Description of What Happened
Unfortunately,
a group of big guys standing there with apparently no reason did not
allow me to enter the old castle. They were wearing no insignia to mark
they belong to city guards or something. But they insist I will have to
go to main gate first and check in. I will try to come back here
tonight.

WAYPOINT 2
Waypoint Type: Architectural
Waypoint Name: New Fortress
Number of aspects: 2

Travel
I have left the ruffians behind and continued towards the city itself.

TRAVEL EVENT
Travel Event Type
You either discover or are offered some surprise assistance or shortcut that makes your Travel extremely easy.

Description of What Happened
A passing merchant offered to take me to the gate on his cart. Offer that one does not refuse.

Description of How Event Was Resolved
I
offered to pay for a transport with money or service, but the merchant
just waved his hand and moved on. As everywhere, so it is here. Some
people are mean and some are kind, for no visible reason.

Arrival
This
fortress must have been built when the old one become too small to host
the city. Its purpose is to keep ruling class safe, but in case of
attack also to serve as shelter for townsfolk living in an area
surrounding the castle.

ASPECT EXPLORATION
Aspect Type: An especially significant adornment within or on this Waypoint and why it’s of particular significance
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Surprising
Above
the fortress entrance hangs the city flag depicting a flute on red and
black background. A flute! For an adept of flute magic like me, that is
the last symbol I would expect to see. I should investigate this
further.

Aspect Type: How the surfaces and textures of this Waypoint feel physically to your form?
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Emotional
As
I touch the fortress walls, I can feel that its structure is not
random. Music is written on its walls, notes carved in the alphabet of
blind musicians. There is magic inserted into these walls, sank into
them when this structure was built! I guess that ordinary citizens
living here know nothing about it!

WISH YOU WERE HERE
To: Flute Master Ioda
I
have just arrived to City of Etulf but I can already feel that this
place is submerged in flute magic. Ordinary people will pass by
unnoticing, but for us, there is musing captured here, waiting to be
released.

WAYPOINT 3
Waypoint Type: Historical
Waypoint Name: Lady Luna’s Garden
Number of aspects: 3

Travel
Walking
around the fortress, I noticed a small patch of green at the far
corner. Someone is cultivating herbs in this fortress. I started walking
towards the green through busy marketplace hearing merchant shouting
while promoting their wares.

TRAVEL EVENT
Travel Event Type
Something goes wrong with your mode of travel that must be fixed or worked around before you can continue

Description of What Happened
Suddenly,
a fight broke between a merchant and a ruffian. Attacker reminded me of
people who blocked my way towards the Old Fortress. I stepped behind
one of the market stalls to avoid being involved.

Description of How Event Was Resolved
But
other merchants were not being idle, they stepped up to help their
friend, and ruffian soon took wind. It seems that these bullies are well
known, and not very popular among merchants. Once it all settled, I
continued towards the patch of green.

Arrival
There are no
market stalls near the garden. It seems that this place is respected by
the citizens. Location is marked with the table giving the location a
name: Lady Luna’s Garden.

ASPECT EXPLORATION
Aspect
Type: Opposition to the remembrance and memorialization of the events
that caused this Waypoint to become regarded as historic
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Important
The
garden seems small, only a few healing plants and refreshing tea herbs.
But as I turned my head from it, I noticed several ruffians. They first
walked by the wall, but as they approached the garden they made quick
protective sign against magic and circled the green as far as possible
trying not to look too suspicious.

Aspect Type: People or powers that protect and maintain this Waypoint from the effects of time and other damage
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Surprising
One
of the merchants approached me. “Our Lady Luna was a healer. Lived some
hundred years ago. Her father left old fortress and built this one” he
told me. Our merchant’s guild keeps this garden in memory of her, and
she protects us from sickness.

Aspect Type: Emotional responses that being in or around this Waypoint (and thinking of the events it memorializes) evokes
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Important
Current
Lord Etulf comes from the different bloodline, and is not fond of Our
Lady Luna, or Merchant’s gild. He seems to have other plans for this
town, does not see it as marketplace any more. There is open rivalry
between Lord and Merchants, but so far no side has significant
advantage, and both are afraid to do anything that would tip the
balance.

WISH YOU WERE HERE
To: Flute Master Ioda
There
is a small garden in this city. It is not much to look at, but it has
huge significant for the city as it is an emblem of merchant guild and
their resistance against Lord Etulf and his ruffians. I wish you were
here as you would be able to read energies of this place much better
than I can.

WAYPOINT 4
Waypoint Type: Archeological
Waypoint Name: Old Castle
Number of aspects: 4

Travel
Night fell, and I am ready to explore the Old Castle.
TRAVEL EVENT
Travel Event Type
Travel conditions change in some significant way that impact your experience

Description of What Happened
Things look different during the night.

Description of How Event Was Resolved
I
was prepared to explore ruins by night, as I brought with me small
protected lantern able to emit directed light. I hope that people from
town will not learn about my night expedition.

Arrival
Ruins
look a little frightening in the dark. I lighted the lantern and started
walking carefully in order not to trip on some rock.

ASPECT EXPLORATION
Aspect Type: How the people feel about this waypoint?
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Emotional
Merchant’s
guild sees this location just like an insignificant monument of the old
times, unaware that it is much more. Old Castle seems to hide so many
forgotten knowledge merchants do not care about. I feel angry when I
think how shortsighted people can be. I also fear what will happen to
the area if current Lord Etulf finds the way to re-learn the secrets of
this place.

Aspect Type: Stories and legends people tell about waypoint
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Supernatural
Legends
tell about old Lord Etulf, father of Lady Luna, who signed a pact with a
daemon. During just one night, daemon destroyed the old castle and used
its rocks to build the new Fortress. Both places were then filled by
dark energies. Lady Luna built her garden and the plants transformed all
the dark into light. She then opened doors of a new city for merchants,
and area started prospering. But the daemon still sleeps below the old
castle walls.

Aspect Type: Especially interesting and distinct features that casual explorer might miss
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Surprising
Music
is written on the ruined walls of the Old Castle too. Maybe there is a
truth that the New Fortress is made from old Castle materials, and that
this music is remnant of some older times.

Aspect Type: The smell and feel of the air
Suit Modifier and Meaning: Surprising
The
air is still, and stale here. It is unnaturally quiet, as if air is too
heavy to move and carry sound. Playing music would be impossible here.

WISH YOU WERE HERE
To: Flute Master Ioda
Old
Castle used to be a place of music, but it is no longer. It would be
impossible to play any instrument in it. This place holds many secrets,
but it may be better if they stay hidden forever.

REFLECTION
During
one of my travels, I visited City of Etulf. It is a strange place torn
between two fractions - city nobles wage a constant power struggle
against Merchant’s Guild.
And while the very walls of the city are
immersed with music, there is strange lack of it on its streets. On some
places, like Old Castle, it is even impossible to make any kind of
sound.
This city seems to live normal everyday life, but there are
dark secrets hidden deep in its root. I pray that they will stay hidden
forever.Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-1922469681783398022021-12-23T11:11:00.002+01:002021-12-23T11:11:18.504+01:00Secrets of Vibrant Isle - another dissapointment
Secrets of Vibrant Isle is a new solo journaling game designed by Craig
Campbell. It is a game I was very hyped about, so I could not wait to
start playing it.
Kickstarter previews reminded me very much on TYOV, so I hoped for similar experience.

Unfortunately, after playing one session (complete 4 weeks dame), I feel I received less than I expected.

First
weeks are dedicated to "exploration of the island" which translates to
rolling D100 to decide the prompt. Prompts are usually nothing more than
call for a skill test on D10. Succeed and you get one thing (usually
good), fail and you get another (usually bad). So far there is nothing
to push the story forward, and no resource management that could make
the tension (resource management is what makes TYOV fun).

Story
mode of the game actually starts after rolling doubles for the first
time on exploration roll (which, statistically, should always happen somewhere
in week 2). But this part of the game consists of only 5 prompts + one
of the several possible finale prompts, and unfortunately also has little to offer.

The final challenge is nothing more than 4 skill test rolled in a row, so this game definitely goes to the back shelf. I really hoped for more from this.

Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-914181628603427762021-12-10T14:23:00.000+01:002021-12-10T14:23:36.956+01:00Apawthecaria - preview edition
There are two upcoming solo journaling games I am really excited about.
One is Secrets of the Vibrant Isle, and second is Apawthecaria.

As Apawthecaria has a free preview, I decided to check it out.

I
did half of the first journey, and then decided to stop, first because I
discovered I am using wrong strategy of rushing ahead without
preparing, and second because preview is limited to small part of the
final content and one should really wait for a finished product.

My
opinion at the end is very positive. This will always be an indie game
(at the end it only collected some 8000 euro on kickstarter, not enough
for serious run, playtesters and proofreaders) so some things will be
left for player to houserule, but what designers did with this limited
resources seems very impressive if judged by preview files.

One
day, his son Beaver left for adventure but never returned.

A year later a baby was left in front his grandfather’s house
with a note that it is Beaver’s offspring. The baby was strange, with big eyes
and skin of the color of dried leaves. Her mother must have been an elf. The
baby girl was named Otter.

As kid grew, she also started behaving strangely….She often
danced alone under the moon, and spent its days whispering to the crows sitting
on top of a few willow tries that grew next to the spring.

But when she opened the cache, the swarm of terrible bugs crawled out of it. She felt so disgusted that she will never try to open elven supply storage again. (miss om re-supply, something is lost, so I let that asset go. Easy come, easy gone).
Exiting the cage, Otter noticed wast forest spreading in the lands before her.Well, this is definitely not an afterlife.
Let see what can we find under the trees.

END OF PART 2.

Traveling through the forest, Otter’s path was blocked by a
huge wolf. She moved carefully towards it, not wanting to fight the beautiful
animal.

Wolf was not there for fight or food. What does it need?

(Rebel against power. What power? Coordinate Language) Otter’s
mind filled with images of animals forced against their will to work against
the community of elves – sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly by small
trickeries, misdirection, lies or petty thieving.

Otter swore an Iron Vow that she will free forest animals
from this tyrannical service (dangerous).

Otter finally reached elven community and was accepted, but
how will she recognize her mother?

Ask crows! Double – a twist! (Depart Balance)

Otter’s mother lived in this community as nature priest. But
elven community never approved her relationship with human, so after having
her, they left the community together.

Since that moment, elven community lost its stability point.
They have no nature priest at the moment, and nature is playing tricks on them.

(Decided against vow here, as it would get too intervened, rather
putting it as a milestone on find parents quest – Once Otter’s mother returns,
stability will return too).

Otter tried to forge the bond with her mother’s community. But,
there is an issue in the village. Some elven kids disappeared, lured by a
strange music from a cave north of the community If Otter could bring the kids
back…

Otter enters the cave, and deep inside it finds a bandit
leader commanding both kids and forest animals with the music from a flute? Is
this Otter’s father flute?

Otter enters the fray attacking bandit leader. He reacts by
playing a song, hoping to enchant her. But Otter resists, humming in her head
the song she learned from father’s writing. Then she ends the fight – Bandit leader
is dead.

Was he the one to command the animals? (Fulfill the vow –
Miss!)

Otter takes the flute from the body. It is not her father’s handmade
instrument, just the common one you can buy on village fairs.

Anyway she uses the instrument to play her father’s tune to
the elven children in a cave, freeing them from spell. Bond with village
marked.

As she exited the cave, wolf appears again. It tells her
that the Bandit leader was just one of several minions, serving one mysterious leader,
figure shrouded in darkness….. Free
forest animals vow is now formidable….

END OF PART 3.

After dealing with Bandit Leader, Otter visited Haunted Barrow to kill
Necromancer, and then entered Maddening Ziggurat to pay a visit to local
Chaos Priest. But inside the Ziggurat she found out that her fame was
there before her. Priest surrender at the first sight of her (doubles on strong hit - Avoid Wound. Successful Compel)

This allowed Otter to fulfill her vow to forest animals. They are now free.

Chaos
Priest told her about the strange person who gave him a flute and
showed him how to play it. He knows very little about him, except that
he is rich and important person in a town lying on the other side of the
Northern Mountains.

Otter left the Ziggurat with 0 Spirit (it
was truly Maddening) but pressing on. As she walked back towards the
elven community, she saw Priest riding full speed North, to warn his
boss about Otter's arrival. Stupid fool, he will probably regret he was
born once his boss finishes with him.

Otter will do some Sojourn to recover and then move North herself.

But
probably not in June. It was fun ride with Ironsworn, but I feel a
little tired of solo RPG-ing. What I need now are some heavy euro
boardgames to burn by brain in a different way for a while.

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

This is my first adventure in the world of a solo RPG Colostle, recently funded through kickstarter..
From house rules, I used only Oracle (see this link), and I disregarded class rules.

My character started as a 4 exploration / 2 combat adventurer called Otter, looking for knowledge about Rooks - strange stone semi-sentinel automatons that roam the Coloste.

Traveling
through the land, Otter finds remains of the strange machinery. It
seems to be broken. No part of it moves. Massive electric Rook seems to
be guarding machinery. Using some strange form of communication, Rook
informs Otter that it will teach him about Rooks if he helps repair the
machine.

Solution to the machinery condition lies with a massive
ice Rook, buried within a cave in a seaside cliff. Otter should be aware
that there are traps…

In order to prepare for the mission, Otter
decided to visit the remains of a medium ice Rook he knows about. But
there are already 2 scavengers at the Rooks site, and they attack Otter.
Combat is quick, and deadly, scavengers are not a match for Otter
skill. (2x treasure)

Otter tries to enter Rook shell, but the
trap activates, surrounding him in ice. From its trapped position, Otter
can see one of Rooks windows, and through it, a small village. The
village is not there if you look from outside of Rook. The window of a
Rook is too small for human to pass through, but big enough for someone
to give some object inside.

Otter tries to combat the ice trap surrounding him but fails, only earning two wounds.
Then, he starts to scream hoping that villagers will hear him and come to his help.
Oracle: will this plan succeed? Yes.
What happens:
One
villager reaches through the window and gives Otter an ancient item -
some kind of strange torch that once was part of electric Rook. It has
only one charge (the item is mostly rubble - 4 spades).
Otter uses the item’s charge to melt the ice trap.
Can Otter establish further communication with the villager? Oracle says no.

Otter
then travels towards the sea. On the way there, he meets a strange
person wearing a castle symbol on a robe. Upon hearing about Otter’s
mission, Castle Guard decides to help and gives him a mace made from
rook finger - strange weapon indeed - combat + 1.

Otter arrives
at the sea cave and finds a massive Rook buried inside it. He fights
Rook’s ice trap and is victorious, even if gaining 2 wounds. This Rook’s
portal window is big enough for Otter to pass through, so he moves to
the other side.

Our hero finds himself to be in some other cave.
This cave is used as a camp by a group of humans, but they are all sound
asleep and nobody notices the new arrival.
Among the sleeping people Otter finds a cage with a very small Rookling inside.

Moving
quietly not to wake up anybody, Otter takes the cage and returns
through Ice Rook. Road back is uneventful and Otter quickly arrives back
to where he started.

He took the Rookling out of its cage, and
big Rook put it into the machine. Operated by a small robot, machine
parts start moving, but no visible output comes out of that.

Satisfied,
massive Rook thanks Otter. It further tells him that Castle Guards use
items called Ticket Keys to direct exit location of Ice Rook’s window
portals, and that they are using them as means of transportation through
the Colostle.
Then, Rook gives Otter one such Ticket Key.

END OF SESSION 1.

Review:

THE GOOD
First thing that you see when you get this book is beautiful art.
Another
great thing that simply shines in this game is world where it all
happens. Game is located within the castle so big, that mountains,
rivers, even oceans are located inside its rooms.
The rooms of the castle are roamed by semi intelligent automatons called Rooks. This material for solo RPG is just great.

THE AVERAGE
Mechanics of the game is based on a standard deck of cards. Each turn is divided into two phases - exploration and combat.
In
exploration phase player draws cards, finds their meaning in the table,
and creates story based on that. It has opportunity to create great
story lines but player needs previous solo RPG experience, it is not
very beginners friendly.
Number of possible results is rather
limited, with 10 red and 10 black cards (suits always represent
encounter with Rooks). Also, some card meanings are to concrete (like:
you fall into trap, club you avoid it, spades you are captured) so
occasionally it is difficult to fit it into current adventure concept.
Combat uses paper/rock/scissors push your luck mechanics that can create interesting outcomes.

THE BAD
Where the game falls are mechanics. They definitely need some important house rulings to actually work.
Classes
of the game differ just by number of cards drawn in each phase, and
this is something that changes during the game. Classes have no
mechanical differences even if they were easy to implement - like one
class could be better when fighting Rooks, others could have additional
healing or similar.
Lots of things are just for the mood sake when they could have been used mechanically.
Additional
minus is the fact that the game never addresses player actions. It
never asks player: what do you want to do now? There is also no way to
answer player's question - like oracle or random idea generator. Also,
there is no way to resolve non aggressive actions other than combat.
For
example: my character is locked in ice trap inside the Rook. Previous
exploration scene told me that Rook stands in front of small village. I
tried to fight the ice trap but I lost. I could fight again, but it
would create the death spiral. I want to scream hoping that someone in
village would hear me, but I have no option for that. I can just create
exploration scene hoping to deduct from that if my idea succeeds or not,
but this could turn difficult with the way exploration table is
created.

This game had potential, but it was not playtested
properly and therefore it was published way before it should have been.
With some house ruling it could create interesting stories, but it may
be more trouble than it is worth. Maybe it would be easier to use just
the setting, and then play another game mechanically to explore its
possibilities.

Setting: 9 out of 10 stars
Mechanics: 4 out of 10 stars.
Total mark: 6.5
Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-81840834625594625652017-08-31T11:48:00.000+02:002017-08-31T11:48:52.097+02:00Bridges to Nowhere PnP Kickstarter editionSome time ago, company Doomsday Robots lunched a kickstarter for their new game Bridges to Nowhere.
I pledged for PnP files, and the time finally came when they arrived.
So far, I made only components needed for two player game, in order to play it solo. I went for the more robust build, making tiles on 2mm cardboard base instead of classic cards.

I packed the game into box from Carcassonne expansion. The current components fit nicely, and there is enough space for 3 to 4 players update should I decide to build it.

The game itself uses drafting mechanism, where you draft bridge elements and then try to build them into your bridge in order to maximize points. Points can be earned from bridge segments (Each built in segment brings specified number of victory points by itself. Matching symbols on adjacent tiles and using specific tiles like monuments and toll stations can significantly boost your point total) or by fulfilling specific contract conditions predefined before each game.

Solo game is well designed, dummy player will always take the best cards and you have to use all your wits to outsmart it. Normal difficulty gives just the right challenge for average player.

Final opinion? Bridges to Nowhere is a nice and thematic drafting and tile laying brain burner that especially plays well with the music of Talking Heads in the background. For me, it is definitely a keeper.Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-10308582160556240712017-08-04T14:10:00.000+02:002017-08-04T14:10:09.613+02:00Siekatsu blowed me off my feetSometimes there are the games that blow you off your feet even before they are publish. Sometimes it is enough just to read the rules or see photo of the components.
But no game have ever made such initial impact on me like Seikatsu that will soon be published by IDW Games.

The game should be available at retailers in September or early October, but I just could not wait that long to try it.

So, I decided to make a simple prototype of the game that could serve me until I get the real thing, especially as rulebook and low resolution image of the board are available on the internet, and playing discs are not so hard to make.

Disclaimer: following opinion is based on the home made prototype, not on the real thing made by IDW Games.

Seikatsu is an abstract game meant for 2 or 3 players with solo option. It is an abstract game of laying and matching discs with the original scoring mechanics that makes it really interesting. But it is also a peace of art. This thing looks astonishingly beautiful on the table even as the prototype, and I can only imagine how good will the original look.

As two player game, it should be a hit for a couples. My non-gaming wife at the moment wants to play only Patchwork with me. Once I get my hands on the real Seikatsu, I believe that I will have no problems to make her try this.

And now we are coming to the most important thing. How does this game fares solo?

In solo mode, player tries to achieve more points than combined score of 2 virtual players. Designers planed 3 difficulty levels in solo mode. Easy (no sense to play), medium (easy, no way to lose if you know what you are doing) and difficult mode that gives the real challenge feeling to the human player (after 20+ solo games in difficult mode AI usually beats me with 3 to 5 points difference, and playing makes my brain burn, which is exactly what I expect from my solo games).

Once it hits the stores, Seikatsu will be highly recommended game by me.

This time, I played using base Revisited SBH rules.

Orcs are played by human player (me). They start in the South West corner and their only goal is to get out of the table through the North East one.
Dwarfs, played by AI are preparing ambush among the ruins. They have 3 elite warriors deployed in NW corner, 4 young warriors in the SE, while exit was covered by dwarf thief and orcslayer (ouch).

To compensate for the killer, orcs took a troll with them.

Orcs made a run for NE corner, but some of them were intercepted by Elite dwarf warriors. Slow moving Troll tagged behind.

In order not to provoke orcslayer, orcs to the front turned right, south of the forest to engage young warriors. Troll managed to join the brawl and score the first kill against elite warrior.

Lone Blade solo system is not meant to simulate human opponent. It plays and feels differently, and so the tactics should be adjusted. On the picture below we see orc leader getting ready to return towards Troll and try to kill a dwarf in melee with him. In Lone Blade figures within 1 medium of the enemy will act before figures in melee, so orc soldiers to the right should take some burden, allowing leader to clean the situation to the left....

..unless of course leader rolls 3 failures, and that is exactly what happened. It allowed all dwarfs to activate, and what is even worst, elite dwarf warrior scored gruesome kill against the prone orc. Troll failed morale check, and being close to the edge quit the field.

This was beginning of the end. Orcslayer reached Orc Leader and killed him in fair duel. Johnathan Grey, patient of the daily ward of psychiatric wing of the
hospital due to his believe in magic. Johnathan has knowledge of the
mythos and a spell book from some other reality.

Danger
“The
Blob” pursues a baby recently born in the hospital. It is a girl named
Maria Rack, from mother Eleonore, father unknown. Baby exists both in
this reality and in some other dimension, and Blob wants to use it to
open a portal between worlds. The only thing stopping Blob from
accessing a baby is Johnathan’s spell book.
So, in order to save the
baby, Johnathan puts the book in the mother’s luggage. Then, our hero
tries to sneak into the hospital archive in order to find baby’s home
address, but he is in for surprise. Hospital archive is a room that
seems to go for kilometers – it might even be endless. Using his mythos
knowledge, Johnathan tries to find the data he needs, only to discover
that several woman named Eleonore Rack give birth to daughter named
Maria at the same time. All these women live at the different parts of
the city, even in different towns and countries. Being unable to get any
conclusion from his findings, Johnathan returned to his room.

Intrigue
Johnathan
is now sure that Euclidipus hospital is just a secret base of the Blob
and his cultists. Blob uses his cultists masked as emergency medical
crews to operate in the city. Once the book left the hospital in
Eleonore’s suitcase, Blob will infect hospital patients with its essence
and in that way travel to try to reach the baby.

Confrontation
In
the hospital, doctors are looking for Johnathan. He uses the oldest
trick in the book and escapes through laundry elevator. Out of the
hospital Johnathan enters the phone booth and uses address book found
there to look for the Rack family. There seems to be one Eleonore Rack
living nearby so he goes there. He is careful to avoid any sign of
medical emergency crews, but there are none of them. Actually, the whole
neighborhood seems deserted.
Johnathan sneaks into the house where
baby should be, only to find out that interior of the house is really an
exterior located on some strange world…

Revelation
Obeying
this evil person all along – the baby is pulling strings! She is really
this world reincarnation of old goddess Mariarack. She opened the portal
but she is unable to bring anything from portal into our world without
the Blob essence.

Showdown
In front of the portal, mother
holds a baby. Baby looks very week, somehow sick. Eleonore accuses
Johnathan that he is trying to kill her baby girl by planting a book
into her luggage.
Johnathan tries to persuade Eleonore to give him
back a book, but she gets mad and turns into monster. She than tears the
book in such a way that pages fly all over. Johnathan grabs pages
flying by him and starts to read spells. One attacking spell hits
monster and it grins with pain. Then, Johnathan casts protective force
field around him, making monster mad since it can’t hurt a mortal
standing before it. Using the feelings of the monster, Johnathan draws
it as far away from the baby as possible, then runs, grabs a baby and
throws it through portal.
The portal starts closing, and all returns
to normal. Johnathan stands inside the house now, and what was a monster
is again a woman. With a satisfied smile, Eleonore steps through the
portal that completely closes behind her.
Johnathan is left standing amongst the torn pages of his book, wandering if he just saved the world or doomed it.

The final game will be packed with goodies, but if you already have some Rory's Story Cubes at home, you can download the free Print and Play test files and give a game a go. That is exactly what I did, returning to the world of Bananaman.

The game uses episodic form, where each episode consists of five different scenes: Danger, Intrigue, Confrontation, Revelation and Showdown.

Picture below shows the final distribution of story cubes.

So, the story goes.
Danger scene.
Eric was attending the Police sports day at the city stadium (cup), when the Heavy Mob (disappearance, thievery cube) stroke. They sabotaged the stadium by positioning smoke bombs around it. Every member of city police is trapped within the smoke (I found all of this by asking complex questions answered by rolling cubes not yet dedicated into the board).
It is time for Eric to eat a banana. Hero is defined by two different characteristics - in Bananaman case this will be super strength and Craw, the intelligent craw.
Time for action. Craw tries to take the policemen out of the smoke by lightning emergency exit guidelines. Imagine Craw dressed as flight attendant from your favorite airline, saying famous words: "In case of emergency light strips on the floor will guide you to the nearest exit. Please note that the nearest exit may be located behind your back...."

All actions in Untold are resolved using emoticons. Player draws emoticon and then applies it to someone in the scene, resolving it in the most appropriate way. This is a great new mechanics that I really liked. Currently, there is a discussion if emoticon cards should also have oracle (yes, yes and, yes but, no, no and, no but) added to them. If my two cents count, I am against it.

So, for the Craw's action I got terrified face. Policemen on the stadium are to afraid to follow Craw out through the smoke. It is up to Bananaman to deal with the Heavy Mob.

Intrigue scene.
Of course, Heavy Mob have a darker purpose then just trapping policemen. With nobody to keep order in the city, it was easy for Eddie the Gent and his friends to get the treasure they were after (treasure chest) - a newest model of the mobile phone.

Confrontation scene.
Heavy mob escaped to their underground hideout (Labyrinth). Bananaman followed them, but got lost in the underground tunes (man with the flashlight calling). After some unsuccessful actions, Bananaman used his banana Stethoscope to listen on the walls, trying to discover position of the Heavy Mob hideout. What he heard was flushing the water in the underground toilet (ashamed face) and following this sound our hero reached the hideout restroom, only to get himself face to face with....

Revelation scene.
..... Doctor Gloom (obeying this evil person all along - stretcher with a patient cube). Doctor Gloom was holding the phone, ordering something over internet....

Showdown scene.
Bananaman followed Doctor Gloom (cube moved from Revelation card) to the cliffs overlooking the city (lowering someone cube). There, Doctor Gloom installed super powerful audio system. His goal was to attack people of the city with the terrible music (head listening some music) he ordered on-line!
Craw reacted by pulling the connector from the loud speakers. (Ashamed face) Doctor Gloom should be ashamed that he connected the complete machinery into just one socket!
Bananaman grabbed evil doctor and took him to the police station. (Irrelevant face) Unfortunately there was no one to meet them there, as all policemen were still trapped at the stadium. So, while Bananaman was searching for a key to some cell, Doctor Gloom managed to escape.

At the end, wind blew and the smoke lifted, allowing policemen to return to the city.
Eric took super powerful audio line and installed in his room. From now on it will be used only for the power of Good Music (as credits rolls up we see city trembling from loud music from Eric's apartment....).

The end.

Final thoughts - John Fiore has done it again. One should not think of Untold: Adventures Await as a real RPG, and it will not replace your favorite solo RPG gems that do for you what games like Scarlet Heroes or High Stakes do for me. And it is clearly stated that it is not an intention of this game to do so. Untold is a fun little storytelling game that you can use to play an episode of something quick and dirty. When you only have some half an hour, and you want to play something that will end up as complete story told from beginning to the end in this short time, Untold is the title you should reach for. Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-63037865587100928862017-04-29T21:21:00.000+02:002017-04-29T21:32:13.161+02:00Solo SBH playtest, game oneI started developing the new AI engine for Song of Blades and Hero rules, so the times has come to test my ideas.

For this game I decided to play ASBH and to take the side of the bad guys - namely humans. My warband had 100 points wizard, Shooter with Composite Bow, Tank with heavy armor and heavy weapon, and 3 low cost warriors, two with spears and one with just a hand weapon.

Orcs warband consisted of 10 models from ASBH rooster rolled randomly.

I played a Quest for magic item scenario, modified in such a way that warbands started in the corners, and needed to exit through the corner to win.

I started the game by sending wizard, tank and archer towards center, while the low cost models moved to take position on the bridge in order to defend access to the marker across the river.

In my Solo system AI has significant activation advantage, so orcs moved fast. They reached first marker before my models, but it turned out to be nothing.

Tank, archer and wizard moved toward the marker in the north west corner, and all the orcs followed them. In this system, AI is not too smart, but it has other advantages and means to challenge solo player.

Archer drew the first blood, sending orc spearman out of action.
But then I made tactical mistake. Instead of charging the nearest orc in order to keep enemy warband as far north as possible, at least until my slow moving infantry reach the defensive position, Tank succumbed to the wizard's cries and checked the second marker.

As it turned to be nothing, orcs rushed south towards the final objective, with my warriors still rather far away from the bridge.

Battle for the bridge was desperate, but despite the odds, warriors managed to survive for two turns,
before they were both gruesomely massacred by the orcs.

But the valiant sacrifice of two spearman was enough for the Wizard, the Tank and the Archer (who lost his composite bow with the final shot of the game, luckily without consequences) to reach the bridge and kill enough Orc models to invoke the Dead outnumber the Living rules.

The game was really tense. It ended with a victory to the human side, but only due to some lucky rolls, and due to some holes in solo mechanic design I detected.
While I made the beta rules of the Lone Blade AI engine for SBH already available in some SBH groups over the social networks, I still need to play few more test games and fix some bugs before giving you the final product. This list might come as surprise, as these are the games from the top of the usual solo boardgames lists.

No. 3. The Lord of the Rings The Card Game

This was the first game I ever sold. I had a basic set and one expansion, and I noticed that I was able to do very little with it. The game requested constant expansions, In which I was not interested to invest, since I was not thrilled with the game at the first place.

No. 2. Scythe

This game created a lots of hype on the internet, and as it had solo mechanics, I rushed to purchase. But the disappointment was huge - game mechanics is so repetitive that you quickly start yawning. The only reason this game is not on the bottom of the list is great Automata - solo mode that is real work of the genius done by Morten Pederson. Still it was not enough to stop me from selling this game at half the purchase price to the first bidder.

No. 1. Mage Knight Board Game

At the bottom of the list is a game that is too big for its own good. Cards are divided into too many decks (while still each deck is too small and gets quickly repetitive), there is to many counters and boards and everything. The game that takes forever to set up, and then forever to clean. And the playing of the game itself lasts too long. When I purchased it I expected the game where every time you play a new story would be told, a new epic adventure worth of writing a fantasy novel. With this I wouldn't mind components and time. But the game failed to deliver. The game lasts just few turns (and each turn lasts too long in real time) where you are rushing your figure on the board to do as much as possible with limited amount of cards. All mechanics, no story. For me it was an epic fail.

As I spend lots of time playing boardgames lately, I decided to return to the blog with a series of posts about the boardgames that I play a lot, and these that just didn't click for me.

In this first post, I would like to mention some solo boardgames that I really play a lot recently, starting from the bottom and moving up.

No.7. Terraforming Mars

For some, it may come as surprise that this game is on the bottom of the list.

The main reason this game is so low is the fact that I can not see it different than re-themed Imperial Settlers, and the settlers theme is much more appealing to me. Still it is a good game that I like to crack every once in a while. The game in my collection is a Polish edition.

Here is one really good game I am sorry I'm unable to play more. It requires both strategy and tactics and puts itself somewhere between boardgame and wargame. The only problem with this game is that it lasts too long, and that it requires several days of real time gaming to finish a scenario. This is the game that asks to be left over night on the table, and with small kids in the house and limited space it is simply impossible. I will play this game a lot more when I get to retirement, in some 30 years...

Friday: A Solo Adventure is one of the most difficult solo games ever created. It is a deck builder that will never allow you to build a perfect hand of cards. The terrible, unforgiving game.... that can give its player a huge amount of fun.

Positioned between Chose your adventure gamebook and a boardgame, Sherlock Holmes offers a real challenge for wits and imagination of a player. The only negative side of this book is that once you solve all the cases, you can not play it again. So when you decide to buy this game, it is recommended to do it as a group purchase with several friends.

It felt hard to select one of his games, so I went for the complete works of the author here, especially that each of his games use similar elements. Someone will like more Agricola, other Caverna, Feast for Odin or Loyang, but the truth is, they are all good and a pleasure to play. Euro games at its finest.

Imperial Settlers is the only game from mentioned that I enjoy playing both solo and competitive. For solo play, it is good to download official campaign mode from publisher's page. Quick, challenging, exciting and cute engine builder.

A game that consists of 4 types of cards and almost no theme whatsoever? This can not be good, right? Wroooong! If I need to get an adrenaline rush in 15 minutes I go for Onirim. It is the most exciting and atmospheric game I have ever played. I have the first German edition with 3 expansions, but the best games I had were played with only base game and Towers expansion. Onirim is difficult card game, unforgiving to mistakes. But if you do everything right, you will be involved into tense end game where every card can make a difference between victory and defeat. If I would need to take one game to desolate island with me, it would be Onirim.

I always wanted to play a Steampunk Fantasy game, in the way of the old computer RPG Arcanum.
With the publication of High Stakes RPG by Ganesha games, I decided to go for it.

In this case, I decided to play in partly generated world, that was result of one of my unfinished solo Microscope games.

WORLD FACTS
HUMANS in this world live in medieval community - cities are few and far between, nobles live in fortified castles surrounded by fields worked by dependent peasants. Society is dominated by male knights. Average human is afraid of both magic and technology.

ELFS of the world live in the forest and respect the nature. Every elf wields folk magic, while High magic is reserved for the ruler classes. They are distrustful of technology. Elf males and females are equal.
Elfs and humans are in constant state of cold war, as humans breed fast and need new lands, which they are taking at the cost of elven forests.

DWARFS live deep underground in cities ruled by Queen Mothers. Dwarven females are rare, they are stronger and smarter than males, and they rule underground society. Dwarfs are experts in technology (clockwork and steam), but they are unable to use magic. They are rarely seen above the ground. A dwarf roaming the realm of man and elfs is usually an outcast, or rogue rebelling against his Queen Mother. Officially, no female Dwarf ever wandered the land, but there are rumors that some of the legendary dwarven heroes who left their mark in the history of the surface world were actually She.

ORC tribes are a distant threat from the far mountains.

All species can interbreed, half-breeds are indeed rare but they exist.

Otter is one such half-breed, born from the relation of human father and efl mother.
His stats are:
Body 2
Mind 4
Aura 2

Traits:
1. Humans see him as human, elfs as elf.
2. Can cast folk magic as elf
3. Able to use technology as human.
4. His own best company
5. Library in his head.

Relations:
1. Mother's tree - place where he grew up.
2. Grumb - a rogue dwarf engineer showed him some technology tricks.
3. Human father he never met.

I used Aladdin Techniqe with Rory's Story cubes to start the story:
Otter enters [abandoned] [dwarven] (DOG, dog is companion, for dwars companions are robots, so: ) ROBOT [workshop] in order to reach the [library] and get a <strike>[book] </strike>(ARTIFICIAL SATELLITE) CALCULATOR to help him with his [technology studies]. But (PANDORA'S BOX), he needs to be carefull not to release something he can't handle.

Arriving to the border of the dwarf country, Otter starts looking for the entrance into the workshop. It is task with difficulty 3. Otter uses his mind to remember where the entrance should be, and adds his relation with the dwarf to roll 5 dice. It is success that includes one complication and one story element.
Otter finds the entrance but the door is locked (complication). Lucky for him, he received a key from Grumb (story element) - a special kind of key that opens all locks in this workshop (counts as McGuffin for this adventure only).

The undergrounds are dark, but Otter uses his knowledge of folk magics to cast light. Workshop should be abandoned, so there is no need to be too careful or secretive.
Our hero walks straight where he thinks the library should be according to Grumb's story. Again task with difficulty 3, and Otter uses his mind to roll 4 dice. And again it is success, with one complication and one story element.
Otter remembered well where the library is, or better to say where it was, as the room was destroyed by fire (complication). The calculator, of course, was no longer there.
But, in the dust and ashes covering the floor, Otter noticed footsteps leading deeper into dwarven caves (story element)

The newest addition to my collection is Feast for Odin, the ultimate euro stile boardgame by Uwe Rosenberg. It is actually a game for which everybody claims that is much better played solo then competitive, and I tend to agree with it - Feast for Odin is actually great solo puzzle, a brain-burner that will stretch your gray brain cells to the maximum.
Of course, this game inspired me to take out also Agricola, that laid forgotten in its shelf for more than a year.
Also my almost seven years old boy discovered BIG Carcassonne (when compared to My First Carcassonne we played last year) and liked it, so we now play it almost every second afternoon.
All in all, lots of things going on, but very few things to be mentioned on the blog...Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-51057731377955184912016-12-01T13:27:00.000+01:002016-12-01T13:27:04.353+01:00Scythe and other boardgamesLots of boardgames on my table recently, so nothing really interesting to write about.

It is a great game, with excellent solo module. As I received it at the beginning of this week, I played just one game so far, on normal difficulty, and I was cleared out of the table before I even realized what is going on. My next game will be on easy mode, in order to help my learning curve :)

From other games, I play a lot of Imperial Settlers solo, and I'm planing to start a campaign soon.
One other old favorite found its way back to my table - Field Commander Napoleon.

I also tried to play again Elder Sign, but it returned quickly back to the shelf. The risk minimizing games with dominant luck element do not appeal to me any more in the same way as they did when I was younger.

Ganesha Games is preparing a new light storytelling d6 RPG. The game is in the Beta Testing phase, and I am lucky to be one of playtesters, especially having in mind that this is extremely solo friendly RPG.

For my first play through, I decided to continue my Star Wares campaign following adventures of young Sith Darth Agnan and his friends, stormtroopers Athos, Portos and Aramis.

Previous adventures of the group (played using different rule sets) can be found here and here.

Here are the stats for our heroes, using High Stakes character creation mechanics:

Back at his corvette "The Guillotine", Darth Agnan wants to interrogate Ewok prisoner.

Task difficulty 4.

Darth Agnan uses Aura 4 + 1 from Trusted by common folk trait. He also decides to rise the stakes - if he fails Ewok will die during interrogation process, and Sith will loose face, by gaining epithet of Ewok killer + 1 for the total of 6 dice to be rolled.

After some dice exploding, I ended with 3 successes and 3 complications. So....

Ewok committed suicide by releasing Ogam gas from device hidden on his body (presence of gass is complication 1). I am using the fact that I rolled a 6 (which was later exploded) to add a story telling element - Darth Agnan was ready for this, so he upgraded his Sith suit with Ogam gas-mask. He is unaffected by gas in the room. But (complication 2) after detecting Ogam gas in the room, ship automatically locked the prison room away from the rest of the corvette, leaving Darth Agnan locked inside. Furthermore (complication 3) Imperial headquarters are automatically informed about presence of the Ogam gas on "The Guillotine", and they are sending a cruiser to destroy the corvette in order to avoid further ecological catastrophes.

Aramis tries to reconnect ships ventilation system in order to transfer Ogam gas from prison cell to other, unused room and to refill prison with fresh air.

Task difficulty 4.

Aramis uses Mind 4 + technician trait +1 + he knows the ship +2 tactical dice.

It is success, but with 1 complication - Ogam gas was transferred to the gun turret, and in this way crew lost control of the ship's main weapon.

Portos uses his Body 5 to break the door to the prison cell (difficulty 2). Success with a complication - breaking electricity circuits in the door made ship transfer all its power to life support systems. All lights in the ship turned off, and team has to return to the cockpit in absolute darkness.

Darth Agnan taps his Light saber trait for automatic success of easy task. Guided by the light of his saber, team safely gets to the cockpit....

...only to see the imperial cruiser approaching and taking attack positions.

Athos contacts commander of the cruiser, trying to persuade responsible persons that Darth agnan should be given a chance to save his ship.
Aura 3 + knows people 1 + friend with political elite 1 + rising stakes (loss of the ship) 1 vs task difficulty 3 - success with one complication and one Story element - Tweelek female Admiral Baaaang (story element) agrees to give one chance to the team, but if the first success fails, she will destroy the corvette immediately (complication).

Aramis and Darth Agnan take the two seat Tie Fighter. They will try to destroy gun turret without damaging the rest of the ship. Aramis will do the actual shooting while Darth Agnan will do the piloting.
Task difficulty 3.
Body 2 + Strategist trait 1 + Wants to be general relationship 1 + help from the Pilot trait +1 to total of 5.

Success with one story element and one complication.
Aramis made a clear shot, so clear that he managed to separate gun turret from "The Guillotine" without damaging either one of them. But turret filled with Ogam gas was pulled by gravitation of the nearby planet, and soon it was lost among debris orbiting it.....

"The Guillotine" was beamed by cruiser into repair bay. It will take some time and lots of money to repair the ship.
Our heroes are not a step closer to solving the mystery of the Ogam gas. Further more, container with deadly load is lost somewhere in inhabited space, and there is a big danger of falling into wrong hands. And our heroes have no means to go after it....

To be continued.....

Impressions: High Stakes works great as solo RPG. System of Story elements and Complications really drives story onward, player never knows what will happen next.
Once it gets published, this system will be highly recommended for all soloists.Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-21137489125915114222016-10-15T23:08:00.000+02:002016-10-15T23:08:45.913+02:00Improvised Subbuteo footballSince my kid collected some weighted figurines from the supermarket chain, I tried to explain him how they can be used for gaming.
Here comes improvised Subbuteo football.
Star wars/Frozen/Ninja Turtles figurines are used as players. We are simulating football played in a home yard - five players, no goal keepers.
Playing field was made from old green blanket and some Ikea railroad tracks. Enough for the evening of fun.Aleksandar Šaranachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406676973370262613noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213548627438921801.post-28080371406291710862016-10-07T13:12:00.000+02:002016-10-12T09:31:27.569+02:00Steambots (Microscope history session part 1)Microscope is one of my favorite storytelling games.
And it's been a wile since I played with it, so it itched my fingers to try it again.
I also noticed that for Microscope linguistic randomizes do better job for me than the graphical ones (for action oriented RPGs it is other way around), so I decided to use Random Event Generator from Game Master's Apprentice cards.

I wanted to do a steampunk history, so pallet said yes to steam machines and smooth-bore firearms, and no to magic.

History started with the rebirth of civilization, and ended with the period of great silence - a time when nothing happens for a longer period.

As usually, I have 3 persons involved in making history. There would be me, yellow player and green player. This time, I decided against creating personalities for dummy players.

First pass saw me adding an event in the end period - Eternal Emperor rules over the submitted masses.

Yellow player, inspired by "Awakened tool" created a period of steambots - steam powered machines with artificial intelligence in the service of men.

Green player, inspired by "Lost Tourist" made an event within yellow player period - famous seamen Captain Turbot forgets his steambot cook Jork on the deserted island.

I was the one selecting first focus, so I opted for "What makes steambots tick?"

Within yellow player's period, I created an event first, explaining how scientist Isak invented micro-steam-chips, that were used to create first steambots.
Then, within this event I made dictated scene (all scenes in this game will be dictated) asking a question "what are the limitations of steambots?"
I explained that micro-steam chips produce heat that needs to be cooled by water. This water turns into steam that further makes micro-steam-chips run. For all this, steambots need water, which they suck from air moisture.
Therefore, intelligent steambots can exist only in wet climate zones. In the deserts and in the other dry lands, people still need to use human slaves.

Yellow player, inspired by "Divide Anger" made an event within his own period: Safety mechanism (similar to Asimov's First Law of Robotics) is implemented in steambots. If a steambot tries to hurt human, it will trigger his self-destroying mechanism.

Green player, inspired by "Divide Attention" reacted to that by explaining how steambots learned that if the humans get hurt by accident while they are performing other tasks, self-destroying mechanism will not trigger.

Finally, as a lance, I created a new period - Artificial Intelligence serving no one but itself.
Within that period I created an event where Jork returns from the deserted island and starts teaching steambots to the new philosophy of freedom - how machines are self-sufficient and have no obligation to serve humans.

Yellow player then selected a legacy: Silence of the Monument - Jork on the deserted island.
Inspired by "Release source" he made an event where Jork dreamed his philosophy during dry period, which he spent immersed in island's only spring. Additional cooling of the running water made his chips run better, and he become enlighten.
So far, I am still reading the novel, and he listens.

Last night, we finished reading Neverending Story by Michael Ende. So this morning, my son decided to build Ivory Tower and surrounding labyrinth using the wooden bricks he found at his grandparents house.

I have to say that I am very proud with his achievement, as he did everything by himself.
